This is a question Conned

swiftyisNOTevil writes, "I have recently become obsessed with the BBC Three show 'The Real Hustle' - personally, I think of it as a 'How To' show for aspiring con artists."

Have you carried out a successful con? Perhaps you hustled a few quid off a stranger, or defrauded a multi-national company. Or have you been taken for the wide-eyed, naive rube that you are?

My view on big issue sellers etc
They are better off than me.

When I refused to buy a copy some guy was a bit quick with his lip in my direction so I turned and said:

"I just wondered if you have a home?"
"No"
"So you don't own a house?"
"No, I'm homeless"
"So it's safe to say you're not paying off a £200k mortgage?"
"Course not!"
"You're better off than me then! Can you spare a quid?"

My view, homeless means no debts.

I owe the bank everything I'll earn for the next 25 years.

I'm sure everyone feels their sympathy for you
All that house owning, not being addicted to drugs, not coming from broken homes, not being abused every day in the street, not being lonely, scared and hopeless must be a real weight on your shoulders.

very good point
we have homeless people in my town who make more money per year than i do......and i work 40+ with a college education.

not all homeless people (or those who live off benefits) do so because of addiction, abuse, etc.........many do it by choice.

it is quite accurate for me to say that around 50% of the criminal defendants that waltz through my office are living off government benefits when they have nothing wrong with them that would prevent them from having a job other than the fact that they are lazy.

i was quite amazed when i found out recently that i could make quite a bit more money per year if i quit working and lived off benefits for myself and 2 kids. yet, i keep working. after all, i do have my pride and the respect of my children....which is far more important!

Oh fuck off
I would love to see the evidence of all these supposedly 'well-off' homeless people. It must be all the trendy gear you see them in that tipped you off.

What a load of bollocks. Go back to reading the Daily Mail and moaning about the state of the country, you delusional fucktards.

That goes double for you Flirting With Badgers. All this bullshit about 'many of them want to be homeless' and 'I could earn more money on benefits' is utter nonsense. For one thing, who would voluntarily give up the comfort and security of a home to stand in the cold and the rain trying to get uninterested people to buy what is essentially a shit magazine?

And what kind of job do you have that pays less than state benefits? Do you work in a chip shop?

Fuck sake.

I've just come off student allowance and now have a low-paid job
Anyone who says they could live better on benefits is invited to come around and fellate my non-existent penis.

I agree
sort of. They're not better off for being homeless, but since just about any lazy fuckwit can get a council house nowadays then being homeless must be either a) a choice or b) an indirect result of other related choices (no one makes you take drugs, for example, so if you end up homeless because of it then serves you right).

And there are plenty of jobs that pay less than state benefit - so long as you can squeeze out a couple of knife-wielding coke-fiend kids you're quids in.

well.....
since you asked.

keep in mind, this is in america where you can get SSI, SSD, SS, HUD, TANF, food stams, medicaid, medicare, etc.

my job: i enforce court orders for defendants to pay fine/court costs/appointed attorney fees upon conviction.........which means the defendants have to disclose their income/expenses to me (failure to do so, or lying about it, will result in arrest for contempt of court).

of the homeless defendants we get, on average, their weekly income is around $300 while they are living in a 'homeless shelter' (basically free housing, free food) and paying no bills.

the ones who have houses they rent or own but are on benefits often make more than $2000 per month but whose basic living expenses are less than $800 per month.

so, yes, in texas, you can live off the govt. quite well......you'll never be rich of course (unless you are suplementing your income with drug sales...which many of my defendants do), but you can live quite comfortably if you live in an area with a low cost of living.....which covers most of the state......and it is a big state.

Perhaps I can draw your attention to this then
The big issue seller who had £57k in his bank accounts when his flat mate murdered him...

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/607212.stm

SO, not homeless, not hard up.

Are there not better fights to pick?
Is your house worth more than you paid for it? if so sell it and you'll have no debt and you too can have your dream job of selling the big issue.

He shouldn't have been 'quick with his lip' but you should really be the bigger man and just keep on walking, asking him if he has a house just makes you look like a bit of a cunt.
