This is a question Conversation Killers

ThatNiceMan asks: Have you ever been talking with people down the pub when somebody throws such a complete curveball (Sample WTF moment: "I wonder what it's like to get bummed") that all talk is stopped dead? Tell us!

WTF?
When did that word become even close to acceptable again? I've not even heard that used since the 90s, and even then only by die-hard racists.

So what then? Is it because the immigration debate has somehow been won by Daily Mail reading right wingers (not just here, all across Europe, but probably can't blame the DM for that) does this mean that 80s style racial slurs are suddenly back in fashion?

..um
I confess I have never heard it used as a racial slur. Only ever heard it used in relation to a chinese takeaway.

I don't think my life has been particularly sheltered so I would guess I'm not alone on this one.

Reminds me of I'm Alan Partidge
When Alan pulls up Michael for saying it, and Michael says:
"Oh, it's fine to say Chinky, like, 'cos, you know, it's a type of people, and it's a food..."

No, sorry....
...you've gone again

I wasn't aware it could be an insult either.
I only found out because of Peep Show. Before then I'd have thought nothing of saying "Let's order a chinky.".

It's not really acceptable, I cringe when I hear it but then I've met rather alot of Chinese people recently and they all seem to think it's ok when said for food. To me it seems like calling a curry a pakis.

Well
it's refered to as 'Indian', i.e. "Let's go for an Indian".
