Creepy!
Smash Monkey asks: "what's the creepiest thing you've seen, heard or felt? What has sent shivers running up your spine and skidmarks running up your undercrackers? Tell us, we'll make it all better"

of course, by "what happened immediately before it" it's "what he convinced himself happened", since dogs cant speak English.

I can understand your misgivings, as, to be honest they're my misgivings too.
I don't believe that this happened, but I do believe 100% that Bob believes it happened.
You know how every clique has 'that crazy one'? Well Bob definately wasn't/isn't that guy. I kind of wish it could be explained by him having spent the hours before holed up in a pub, but again I can't.
I saw his Mum a few years ago at his Dad's funeral and a group of us chatted about how big the bloody dog was....and she kind of hinted at the fact that Bob had had counselling after it, and asked us never to speak of it again.

To bo honest I can't really remember the dog's name, and Max, as you say, sounds about right.
My friend isn't called 'Bob' either, but has such a distinctive name and nickname that it didn't seem fair to use his actual name here. especially as he is a broken shell of a man who believes in talking, doom-mongering dogs.
