This is a question Desperate Times

Stranded in a hotel in an African war zone with no internet access for two weeks, I was forced to resort to desperate measures. Possessing only my passport and the clothes I stood up in; and the warning "You can catch it shaking hands with a vicar out there" ringing in my ears, I had to draw my own porn in order to preserve my sanity.

Alas, it all came out looking like Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts, but, as they say, any port in a storm.

What have you done in times of great desperation?

And now current events have made desperation return.
Apparently the semiconductor market is not doing too well at the moment. The company I do contract work announced at 4:00 yesterday that all of the contract employees are being forced to take a five day weekend as a cost saving measure. They have a sociopathic indifference to the fact that most of us don't get paid time off, which means that we get a very small paycheck next week.

Fucking bastards. If they fired a few MBAs and didn't give them Golden Parachutes, they'd save enough money to keep the plant roaring right along.

So now in my desperation I'm putting out my resume yet again, and hoping that I land something before my contract runs out or they decide that they don't need contractors after all...

Anyone know a company looking for a degreed mechanical engineer in the Central Virginia area? I've told my representative at work to put out my resume and promise them that I can walk on water, and I'll learn how as I go; to promise them the moon and I'll build a rocket; to promise them blowjobs and I'll arrive on my knees...

Thanks.
Yeah, Zee Germanss are not a nice bunch. (Meaning the ones at this particular company, not Germans in general.) I'm not out of a job yet- but the word is that they're going to do the same thing again between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2, so it would be a Very Good Thing if I were out of there before that...

Ever thought about teaching?
If you don't mind teaching, Virginia Tech's always got a few openings for mechanical engineers with degrees to instruct the next generation of degreed suckers, er mechanical engineers.

I'd gladly teach.
The problem is that they require at least a Master's, and I've only got a BSME.

Although at Tech I suppose they'd take me, as long as I can supply my own bullet proof vest...

Same situation here
Got told last week that my job role was at risk, had to basically re-apply for it today with an interview to 2 of my managers, but with enough changes to the position that i know i havent a cat in hell's chance of getting it.
also did a 45 min presentation to the management team as to why my current job should be kept within the company rather than outsourcing it.

it's a fucker, especially at this time of year with 2 kids (youngest has her birthday on xmas eve as well).

Good luck mate though - everything happens for a reason. just try and take whatever positives you can (and if u are like me, then whatever stationery you can steal on a daily basis ;0) )

I hope something comes along sooner rather than later.
