This is a question Family codes and rituals

Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

What codes and rituals does your family have?

How come
so many people seem to have nice, fun families? I feel like I've gone trespassing on Walton's Mountain: a bizarre mix of nausea, envy and suppressed aggression.

I'm a bit scoobied meself
about how many folk find their families annoying habits quirky or amusing.

I think it's a question of getting over it.

I have never experienced anything more catharsising than telling the old pair to fuck off.

They've been a lot more tolerable/tolerant since then.

Hmmm,
I fear we might be suffering from Miserable Irish Childhood/Kids Syndrome (heh, that makes us MICKS). Quick! Write your memoirs!

But honestly, do 99% of b3tards really find their families endearing? That's hugely disappointing.

I used to hate my father when I was a teenager
then I grew out of it when I left home and realised how much better I had it than some kids.

I'm with you there CHCB
I put it down to being an only child and having no one to share this stuff with.

Yep.
I've found this one to be a bit difficult.

As I've tried to think of stories I've just remembered all the reasons I moved out as early as possible.

In fact, I think that's my family ritual: Move out. Move far. And never move back.

Not so fun either.
I was going to write a brief, sarcasm-laced post regarding the history of paranoia, hysterics and loveless relationships in my household, but I think this is a slightly softer way of putting it - so I salute you, chcb.

Only SOME of our families/childhoods were fun.
Remember, chcb, this is selective memory. I thought my dad's "Got my wallet, got my keys, got my dick" was funny but I did NOT think my dad was very funny. I couldn't wait to get out and it wasn't until years after my parents divorced I could even marginally appreciate him.

So no, you aren't abnormal. Just better at remembering your childhood.

Striking a chord there.
Especially recently.

Might write about it if I can sort out the details / not get caught by possibly family lurker.
