This is a question Family codes and rituals

Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

What codes and rituals does your family have?

Interestingly (to me, anyway). Actually, it ain't, but neither are 80% of the inane stories this week.
"Freddy Woo writes, "as a child we used to have a 'whoever cuts doesn't choose the slice' rule with cake. It worked brilliantly, but it's left me completely anal about dividing up food - my wife just takes the piss as I ritually compare all the slice sizes."

My ex is trying to divide up our joint house (where he does not live) on this basis - I choose a price and he decides whether to buy the other half from me or sell the other half to me. I see his point but I don't like it as I don't want to be homeless.

*counts crumbs*

is this
fuckwit non commital ex or have you still utterly failed to dump him because although he tortures your very soul and mental state, he gives a good shag?

Oh, no, he's still on the scene.
We're back in happy mode for a probably brief period. Christ, I'd never buy a house with him, not least because he can't even afford to eat. Nah, this is Dutch-ex No. 1, before lovely-ex.

While I feel for your situation..

It's not a bad idea all told really, would stop people getting screwed over so often (namely men!)

Agreed: that's pretty clever
Whichever option the bugger chooses, you'd be left thinking you pitched it too high/low, that you'd either given him a bargain or stitched yourself up with an over-high valuation.

Mean but smart.

Don't do it.
get it valued. Split half and half if you are happy with that. Use lawyers if he won't agree. These things don't ever end amicably.

I reached an amicable agreement
however she changed her mind. £5K in solicitors bills later I finally got to court to discover that she had sold the house despite a court order and shipped more than £100K out of the country, making it almost irrecoverable.

Which was nice.
