I was in halls for my 1st year of university. It was nearly Christmas and a poster went up advertising a christmas meal and at the bottom it said 'fancy dress'
So me and my mate decided to go in drag (any excuse eh) so with borrowed dresses ridiculous wigs and stuffed bras we went down to the canteen.

When we got there we were two of about 10 people in fancy dress, there were some of the inevitable people who didn't bother but the vast majority were in black tie and ballgowns. What the shuddering fuck?! Still we had a laugh and I got off with a girl at the party that followed which in dress was quite a surreal experience.

I have no idea why they all read fancy dress as 'smart clothes' mind you it was in Wales

There is a village in Buckinghampshire where they hold an annual charity dinner.
Year in and year out they had a fancy dress theme and invariably some bothered but the majority turned up in formal evening dress. So, organiser one year decides to make it easy and declares it to be a James Bond theme. True to form, no one went in formal evening dress and the amount of gold body paint sales in Harrods went through the roof.

Excessive drinking, fucking, & massive drugs, plus a bit of study all paid partly by your taxes (there were grants back in them days).

Fucking brilliant. I enjoyed myself a bit too much as I only got a 3rd but it was the acid house/rave days so I was of my tits for most of it.

You're slightly bullshitting about the massive drugs though. Decent pills were thirty or forty quid a pop in the nineties so staying fucked for any significant portion of your student life would have been well beyond a student grant.
