In the South
I've recently moved to the Deep South, Bible belt, USA. I've been told by folk I meet that I should go to church, not 'cuss' (they talk about the 'D' word, and the 'c' word - not douche and cunt, but 'dang' and 'crap'), not speak to black people (seriously - the woman at the visitor centre told me this - they are dangerous apparently), not to drink, not to associate with faggots - the list could go on - the media protrayal of the deep south is scarily accurate. Our local paper had an article about lynching on the front page on sunday.

But all the time anyone is speaking to me I'm thinking of Deliverance. and Forrest Gump. Because that's how they talk here.

So can anyone recommend a film about the Deep south in which the southerners are not pig-fucking, sister-loving, nigger-hating, bigoted crapbags? or give me a job back in the UK?

'Midnight in the garden of good and evil' anyone?

cabin fever
Is Cabin Fever set in the South? It's a stinker of a film but it does have the great 'What's the gun for?','It's for the n******' bit at the beginning and the 'Hey, Ma niggas' bit at the end.

I think it may be set in the Deep South...
The Ladykillers (I've only seen the Cohen Brothers version), which I thought was a fantastic film, even if the girl I watched it with complained bitterly throughout.

None of the issues you mention above.

The Ladykillers
Not a patch on the utterly brilliant original Ealing comedy, but if you can somehow get your brain to treat it as a completely different film it's a good watch...

@Cockbrush
Having only seen the remake (I know, it's terrible, but true) I was able to enjoy it as a film in its own right, but now I have to watch the original...

The book is better, of course...
But 'To Kill A Mockingbird,' if you've not seen/read it already. Okay, it does have racism but the majority of characters just reek of charm and loveliness.
