In any significant city you could place and receive an order for books, food or just about anything else faster by post, phone and telegram a hundred years ago than you can today. Plus you didn't have to look like a wanker using Apple products or go mad trying to use Google ones.

Cynicism was drummed into me by a primary decade of thatcherism and unemployment. Must be tough for those poor folk reaching middle age with their childhood space-age expectations shattered.
