as with any other ideology
people emphasise the bits they like and ignore or explain away the bits they don't - sometimes saying that they're allegorical, sometimes saying that they're prejudices of the times and distinct from the 'true message'.

It's neither more nor less absurd than someone who claims to find opposition to drinking alcohol in the Bible.

The only reason one seems stranger than the other is because of what we're used to.
