it makes quite a lot of sense
to forbid alcohol and premarital sex, if you're living in an age when the first sends you blind and the second gives you syphilis.
The trouble is that it can lead to, in effect, wanting sex to lead to syphilis because otherwise people will be having premarital sex...

but that's a fucking interesting take.
could also have been handy to help prevent rape back in an age when respect for women was a little bit less par for the course, so sensible really.
nowadays, however, one of many outdated, misinterpreted, and exploited religious dogma... imo of course!
