I pull out my beard hairs the way some people bite their nails.
I also bite my nails, but that's not weird.

i find myself doing the same (beard hairs not nails), but then i just trim it down or shave it off and the problem is gone :)

I do that as well. Especially my moustache. If I'm really stressed it starts to look very patchy.

given a week or two I can end up plucking out most of my moustache.
I should probably develop a shaving habit instead.

It seems to be a natural progression of the old "stroke your beard thoughtfully in contemplation", although I also become more aggressive in my pulling when stressed. As for shaving, bah and humbug I say!

Trichotillomania is the name of the condition. Had a girlfriend with a baldish patch. She had great fingernails though.
