London 2012
Now I'm not one given much to jingoism/nationalism but there have been rare occasions when I feel proud to be British. Mostly these reasons are tea related but one national even sticks out in my mind.

Obviously I'm not talking about the Olympics here but the rioting that happened just prior. Watching the news I saw gangs of yoof hurling bricks , bottles and the odd molotov at the police. The police themselves where fighting back with baton charges and tear gas. I was awestruck, this was it I was watching London, our nations capital burn. This was was the setting to this gleaming moment of national pride that I felt.

You see, in the midst of all this carnage and anarchy the rioters had managed to break open the shutters of an electronics store. As the missiles flew and the fires raged around these rioters formed an orderly queue to loot it .

I honestly felt like standing up and saluting the telly.

...but then there was this person, snapped looting crisps from Poundland. That was it. Her carpe diem moment - crisps from Poundland. This shows a distinct lack of ambition, and makes me a bit ashamed of the entire country.

That is fantastic.
Reminds me of an article in the local rag about about an obese woman who held up a cheesecake shop, but was a bit out of shape, and was caught waddling down the road with a fistful of cash and a partially eaten cake.

the best thing about those riots
was when all the simpering liberal types who had enthused about the students' riots the previous year did a total U-turn and condemned them

on that day, I learned that senseless violence and vandalism is only OK if the violent parties are mainly white and upper-middle class

Our local paper was doing nervy paranoid stories insinuating that the violence would reach us ANY DAY NOW.

I liked the simpering liberal types who tried to justify them, saying it was about the subjugation of the poor and downtrodden.
For me the stand-out image was of Clapham high-road, with all the sports shops and electronics shops turned over, and the Waterstones in the middle untouched.

Swipe yourself an e-reader from the electronics shop, then go home and load it up with out of copyright classics.
Mind broadened, without any need to cart off a load of heavy books (which would otherwise increase your chances of being picked up by the fuzz).
