I find his voice really gratesand the guitar solos have considerably more notes than is needed.

doesn't mean he can't sing.as metal bands go, I'd suggest they are about average in terms of notes per guitar solo, but they aren't too everyone's taste. They have got some fucking cringeworthy songs.
