I started making a very pretty lamp
which will be gorgeous when it's finished. The key word is 'started' here, however.
I also have a terrible habit of starting drawings, paintings, books etc and not finishing them.

Same
I have several books at about 50,000 words each lying around in drawers half finished

I did several creative writing modules on my degree and my lecturers always said I was one of the best in their class.
I haven't done any serious writing in years though- I was much better at literary criticism, just missed a first in fact.

I would love to get back into writing but I feel my writing senses are too dulled by work, age, and being exposed to crass stupidity every day.

Any advice to an old git?

Just write a bit every day
and note down interesting things/phrases you hear. If you're really intent on writing then set aside time for it.

I know what you're saying.
However, I have a job and a mortgage and never enough time for:

Record shopping
Cooking
DJing
Reading
Video gaming
Housework!
Modelling
Laundry
Ironing
Gardening
Skateboarding

Yeah that's a lot more than I ever wrote
mine were short stories. And I'll frequently write about three lines of a song and decide it's complete shite, bin it, then decide three days later that actually it wasn't, be unable to find it or finish it, and bin it again.
Very annoying.
