Even more generic evening thread
with fewer people.
I just came across a half completed script I did some time back in a drawer. What unfinished project have you got lurking?

Alt Q: Favourite Pixar film?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:05, 98 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
Toy Story 2
Fantastic film.

Up there with Godfather 2, The Terminator and Dead Man's Shoes.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:06, Reply)
Good choice
my sister is only seven and it's her favourite as well
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:08, Reply)
Ha!
I have the same taste in Pixar as a seven year old!

Does she like breakbeat as well?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:09, Reply)
I wouldn't like to enquire
but TS2 is a great film, the whole franchise is in fact
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:10, Reply)
It is indeed.
So much charm. It's like my love for Sultans of Ping FC- there's an unprepossessing humanity at the centre of it all that it actually makes a horrific troll like me nearly like the world, and most of the people in it.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:12, Reply)
Though on the same line
A Bugs Life is also good
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:16, Reply)
I would have preferred
If you had denied that I am a 'horrific troll'.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:17, Reply)
You've slipped out of your troll-like ways

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:21, Reply)
did I ever have any trollish ways?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:23, Reply)
you seem to think you have

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:26, Reply)
Only ironically.
I'm no Rory Lyon, that's fo sho.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:27, Reply)
I'll take your word for it

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:32, Reply)
Ha!

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:32, Reply)
Congratulations on getting out from under the bridge

(, Fri 7 Jan 2011, 9:23, Reply)
I've had the whole Toy STory series played over and over and over again by my 4 year old this Christmas
He loves all of them.

So do I. I'm not bored of it. Number 3 is spectacular, but number 2 runs it close, and may even be better.
(, Fri 7 Jan 2011, 9:24, Reply)
about 4 books on my laptop

Most of what I do ends up half-finished.
How are your blisters now Amberl?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:13, Reply)
Still horrible
but not burst so all is good.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:15, Reply)
Have they gone down at all?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:16, Reply)
nope not at all

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:20, Reply)
Not tempted to pop them yourself?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:21, Reply)
no because I know
they'll scar for definite then, and I already have enough small burns/cuts on my hands from pure clumsiness
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:24, Reply)
How far off healing do you think they are?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:27, Reply)
According to the internet
a week (so a few more days) for the blister to go down/burst of it's own accord, then another week to heal. Still possible scarring :(
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:32, Reply)
Ouch.
How did you do it exactly?

Also, have you worked out how heavy your bag is for your return journey?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:34, Reply)
I used the wrong mug in the microwave
usually the mug handle is warm but not hot, but the ceramic handle heated up immensely so when I picked it up it burnt those two fingers quite badly. I put the cup down quite hard (didn't spill) and it splashed on the back of my hand as well.

I'm going on the coach so no worries about weight thankfully. How're you Jeff?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:37, Reply)
*pulls mong face at amberl*

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:39, Reply)
*gurns*
I am a complete mong.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:42, Reply)
i managed to get two blisterlines across my fingers once
when I was pulling a tray out of the oven at work and it slipped and I tried to catch it....
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:45, Reply)
ooh that sounds painful
how long did they take to heal?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:49, Reply)
a week or so? I still have a triangle faded burn mark on the back of my hand from a similar incident 9 years ago though :(

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:52, Reply)
I have a burn scar on the back of my hand
from last week. I'm going to look like a fucking emo
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:15, Reply)
I once managed to pick up a hot iron from the wrong side.
That was fucking agony.

It also taught me the value of looking at what I was doing.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:54, Reply)
MONG

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:58, Reply)
It really fucking hurt I can tell you.
If only I'd had such a useful guide before I started the ironing, I could have saved myself a whole heap of pain.

My monster drum kit project
I have acquired two identical kits now and my third one is primed for gigs and practice. So now I need to plan and construct my super kit. Also my art degree friend is going to strip and re paint the entire thing.

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:23, Reply)
I've never seen that show.
Is it entertaining?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:21, Reply)

Been to the hospital today which wasn't that exciting, just gave them a load more blood to play about with.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:23, Reply)
You still sick? I thought you were better now?
I met up with my cousins today first time since my aunt died. That was a bit fun!
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:25, Reply)
Did none of you like your aunt?

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:25, Reply)
no it;s their mum, my aunt. It was a bit weird that's all.
I just did my usual try and be funny to distract from the tension thing. I think it helped?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:28, Reply)
Sorry, when you said it was fun, I assumed she was some wicked aunt.
That's shit.

How old are your cousins?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:30, Reply)
24, 29, 31 I think
two oldest are the worse. Especially my cousin Will cause he has severe learning difficulties and relied on her so he is really struggling. It will be ok I think just gonna be shit for a while.

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:36, Reply)
I once took a basic outline of a script for a Panto, and fleshed it out to be about an hour long, but needed more
I then showed it to a friend, to gauge her response. She wasn't critical, but simply gave me ideas. Sadly, when I sat down to consider them, I realised I didn't give a shit anymore. Not the best!

Alt Q: The Incredibles, no question. Fucking loved Up though.

In other news this had me laughing for a good half hour
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:16, Reply)
Alt q: Wall.e
It's so brilliant.

(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:32, Reply)

or something? Easy clean up and a bit of ventilation
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:34, Reply)
I did all the sanding and paintingof my bedroom furniture in the bathroom
God, that was over 9 years ago.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:35, Reply)
it's quite a big table. Once the weather is nice I can do it on our roof garden
It's going to be quite a medium brown and then I am going to paint cream and dark brown spotted circles on it a little like this but less busy
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 22:37, Reply)

I started making a very pretty lamp
which will be gorgeous when it's finished. The key word is 'started' here, however.
I also have a terrible habit of starting drawings, paintings, books etc and not finishing them.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:26, Reply)
Same
I have several books at about 50,000 words each lying around in drawers half finished
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:28, Reply)
I did several creative writing modules on my degree and my lecturers always said I was one of the best in their class.
I haven't done any serious writing in years though- I was much better at literary criticism, just missed a first in fact.

I would love to get back into writing but I feel my writing senses are too dulled by work, age, and being exposed to crass stupidity every day.

Any advice to an old git?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:33, Reply)
Just write a bit every day
and note down interesting things/phrases you hear. If you're really intent on writing then set aside time for it.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:37, Reply)
I know what you're saying.
However, I have a job and a mortgage and never enough time for:

Record shopping
Cooking
DJing
Reading
Video gaming
Housework!
Modelling
Laundry
Ironing
Gardening
Skateboarding
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:41, Reply)
Yeah that's a lot more than I ever wrote
mine were short stories. And I'll frequently write about three lines of a song and decide it's complete shite, bin it, then decide three days later that actually it wasn't, be unable to find it or finish it, and bin it again.
Very annoying.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:37, Reply)
I have a book that's moving very, very slowly.
Problem is, I'm a ruthless perfectionist and spend most of the time constantly reworking it and thinking it's utter shite.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:43, Reply)
I have three books in drawers
all waiting to be finished. I'm not a perfectionist though. What's your book on?
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:44, Reply)
A lad living in a smallish industrial town who's about to become an adult and realises there's a lot more to the world than he's been told.
Then he breaks from the norms, finds happiness of sorts, gets condemned by society and falls through the cracks, ending up in a "care" facility that's a thinly-disguised prison.

It's a mixture of real life and nightmares, with plenty of backchat and black humour on the way. Got about 30 sides of A4 so far, it's about 1/6 to 1/4 done.
(, Thu 6 Jan 2011, 23:50, Reply)
I've always thought that while it's important to write about what you know
If you write too personally then you run the risk of getting too close to the subject- a writer needs critical distance to gain authority over their work, rather than have the work itself dominate the process.
