I kind of push the aubergine about in the sieve beforehand to get most of the bitter water out. And use a potato masher. And it's incredible.
I might make some now, actually. I have everything but an aubergine.

trying to squidge totally mushy aubergine between your fingers without it going everywhere was quite tricky!
