I'd go with one of the Rudolf Hesses. The one that survived the war.
He was incarcerated after the war as the only prisoner in Spandau prison, due to his attempt to broker a peace deal with the West against Hitler's wishes. His guards rotated between British, Russian, American and French as part of their job-sharing of Berlin.

My grandpa used to go and have tea with him. Said he was erudite and polite.

You're thinking of the commandant of Auschwitz. His name was Hoess NOT Hess.
