I honestly have no idea why it has become such a big thing, other than because it has been talked about as one.

It's simple and not all that much fun. I've even played better versions of the same type of thing.

In truth, neither.
I had hand-held Space Invaders and Breakout, and played Daley Thompson no more than about three times at friends' houses. I was more interested in books and music. This has not changed one iota.
