I had an argument with a former colleague
who was convinced she was Scottish. Technically, as all of her great grandparents emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland she is genetically more Scottish than I as I'm an English/Scottish halfling. But she did not understand even slightly why I thought growing up in Scotland made me Scottish and her growing up in New Zealand made her a Kiwi.

I had this discussion with the missus the other day as well.
She identifies herself as a Latina, and legally she can claim to be as her mother is Mexican. But she herself was raised in South Carolina, and her parents both grew up in San Diego, so she's as Mexican as I am Irish. Culturally we're from SC and NY respectively, but we still acknowledge where our ancestors came from.

Modern world is complicated
People move about too much. Nationalities, meh. Kind of cool to think about all the traditions that go all around the world.
