Tell them to go and talk to their tutor,
or their Senior Tutor (or equivalent person in charge of student welfare in their department). They will have seen this scenario many times before and will be able to advise.

If we have a student in that position we usually do what we can to help them. Has this person had any official notification from their department? I'd think there would be some kind of communication stating the circumstances.
