No, don't start with that
why an umbrella is suddenly art, and costs millions, when the artist bought it in Primark for a few pounds? Only because it has the name of the artist on it. It's like buying a signed picture of Rooney.

see my post above about what people pay for it
that's the dealers' faults. The artists are often trying to work something out conceptually and as such it takes work to follow a line of reasoning. I'm not saying it's all good, mind, or that everyone should like it, but it doesn't make it not art

it really isn't as simple as that.
You can say that you don't like it, absolutely. I'll happily admit that I neither like nor "get" some art, but tht doesn't mean it isn't good or that it required no skill. In the same way that, say, Vivaldi leaves me entirely cold, but that doesn't make it bad music.

Right
I agree with you. Some people like punk, some like indie music, that's fine. However, that's all music, and noone would tell you you're insensitive because you don't like one of them (you might think it, but there isn't a group of artists telling all of us which music is good)

With this type of art, I've heard so many times: "You don't like it because you have no culture or a feeling for art" Really? I don't like it because it's crap. Easy like that. I think it's crap, it's crap to me. There's no group of artists to tell me what's good or not.

Now, if there's a nice drawing, made with a lot of detailed and that, that group of intellectuals can tell you that that's not art anymore, as it's obsolete. Why? It's still nice, who told them they have the right and the wrong about what's art?

people
do say that shit about music. See Monty for details

Yes
He's not universally considered a genius on the matter, is he? Nobody in TV tells you what's good or bad music, as we clearly have different tastes. But they do about drawings and sculptures. Why?
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:44, Reply)
Plenty of TV, radio and written media is opinionated about music.

(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:45, Reply)
And you cand find all type of opinions out there
in favour or against what you like. How many art critics go out there saying "that white exposition was awful" Noone, because the other critics would send the dogs for him.

In the same way that much media only writes positive reviews of music
because it drives the industry and the buyers. In the same way as music these galleries have to appeal to a broad audience, in the same way as in the music section in HMV you have all types of audience, young, old, metal, pop, dance etc. If you don't like country and western, you walk past the country and western aisle. Saying HMV is shit because it stocks some country and western is defeating the purpose of HMV and the enjoyment you can get from all the other types of music available there.

Have you ever listened to The Arctic Monkeys?
I've never seen a review of them that's not been wanky fawning of the highest order, yet they make most right-thinking peoples ears bleed.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:55, Reply)
strangely, their singer did some good stuff
under the name Last Shadow Puppets.

Arctic Monkeys are wank though. See also: the Strokes. Nothing new there, yet they got rave reviews. Despite being very ordinary.

people who say you don't like it because you don't have a feeling for art
are fucking idiots. But be careful - you don't like it because you THINK it's crap. Not because it is crap. That's perfectly fine because almost all forms of art are subjective, so you're totally entitled to not like it or think it is crap, but that doesn't mean it actually IS crap.

And there is a group of artists telling all of us what music is good and what is shit right now, they are called critics. Or Monty. It's exactly the same as art.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:34, Reply)
Music critics
are a lot more relaxed about it. They won't say: if you don't like it you know nothing about music. Art critics, on the other hand...

And, anyway, art should include music, books, films... not only paintings and sculptures. They're pretentious and patronizing.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:46, Reply)
man, you've not met the right music critics ;)
They are worse than anyone.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:51, Reply)
especially the cunt at 24/7 magazine in plymouth

(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 10:56, Reply)
You might be right
I try to avoid critics in general. In that case, I'd be upset with them too, as much as with the art critics.
