All I can say ishaving lived under two supposedly diametrically opposed systems the effect on the day to life of most people is negligible.

Well, you flatter them by calling them"diametrically opposed." The only difference seems to be whether they're proud or slightly embarrassed about having been sent to Eton.

Neither the Tories nor Labour or even the Lib dems these days could be called extremethey all occupy a centre left/right stance

I find this is due to wanting to be popular, rather than real conviction.A strong labour government would inevitably go left, just as the strong tory goverments of the 80's headed up the Unter Dem Linden.
