It's about ten years since I was last there too (Florida version rather than Anaheim).
Islands of Adventure hadn't been open long. I imagine there's stacks more now.

The rides are universally (doh) pretty spectacular.
And it's not as sickeningly cutesy as Disney (although Disney does have its fair share of good rides).

but my memory is that you're not waiting a horrendously long time in them, and there are generally little pre-show bits along the way to build up the experience.
