perhaps this is something I need to investigate - I was thinking of spending pennies on a netbook if I get my job..why would this be better?

It's a matter of personal preference.
If you like physical keyboards, get a netbook. If you don't, then a fondle slab is the way to go. Android is a little cheaper on that score, but there is no real difference to be honest.

You can get some pretty cool cases with physical keyboard built in.
They're pretty ace and gives you the best of both worlds.
