it occurred to me recentlythat throughout most of my teens I didn't actually know any girls who shared any of the same interests. I barely knew any who liked rock music for instance.
Getting to uni and finding out that such girls existed was awesome.

pretty much this^Although probably combined with more crippling inability to interact socially in my case.
