how come they let yours stay fast?

Err... Because I'm awesome.
I've had various drugs to control things, but they are reluctant go down the radioactive iodine route at this point because of the potential damage it could do to my eyes.

ah, they did the drugs on me
for a little while. When I stopped it went faster again and they were like "QUICK! To the radioactive room!"

I should be on these pills for the next 12 months and from there they'll reassess things.
