My understanding is that it is a bilingual port-manteau word...Viande = meat
Aloo = potato
It is a Goan dish created as fusion between local cuisine and that of Portuguese settlers in Goa. The fuckloads of chillis, I think, were to the Portuguese taste.
Someone could look this up and prove me wrong though...

Probably from the Portuguese vin d’alho (“wine and garlic sauce”), Sorry. Portuguese was right though.
