I call lunch.
I just had Supernoodles and Sunchips becaus ethere was nothing else in the house. Curse you, shiftless lazy weekends!

Alt: Allowing for teh fact that we range from Aldi to Fortnum & Masons here, what supermarkets are the best for an all-round weekly shop?
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:18, 105 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
Tesco innit.
Fabregas has gone to Barca, I might have a little cry.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:21, Reply)
Tesco here is full of chavs and pikeys.
And that's relative to WESTON!

Home-made chicken and peppers vindaloo, NAAAH NAAAH!
I don't do weekly shops, I work just around the corner from Waitrose so I tend to go most days after work and pick up what I need. This may be my downfall, but I rarely have a lot of unused crap piled up in my cupboards.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:29, Reply)
Did you make the vindaloo sauce yourself? There's loads of vinegar in it, right?
I understand the 'vin' in vindaloo is vinegar, also that it's not hot by definition, merely a little sour. The 'fuckloads of chilli' convention is peculiar to Britian.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:42, Reply)
Do you mean 'particular'?

(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:56, Reply)
My understanding is that it is a bilingual port-manteau word...
Viande = meat
Aloo = potato
It is a Goan dish created as fusion between local cuisine and that of Portuguese settlers in Goa. The fuckloads of chillis, I think, were to the Portuguese taste.
Someone could look this up and prove me wrong though...
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:03, Reply)
Probably from the Portuguese vin d’alho (“wine and garlic sauce”),
Sorry. Portuguese was right though.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:10, Reply)
Waitrose and Sainsbury's are the only non-pikey supermarkets.
M&S are OK but you cannot do your weekly shop exclusively there so they don't count.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:30, Reply)
M & S isn't a supermarket, full stop.
They have a food hall, but thay're still a department store.

I suppose Fortnum's is, as well...
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:32, Reply)

Oh man, I took my tablets about an hour ago at work, as they're due, and I feel really really out of it.

Whichever supermarket is most convenient
I used to have a Tesco just up the road, and one directly on my way home, and a giant one just by my gym, so pretty much did all my shopping there. Now there's a big Asda on the way home and a Sainsburys Local in the building, so them. I never do a big shop, it's always bits and pieces really.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:34, Reply)
I would love to shop solely at Sainsburys
but Tesco have the monopoly on everything near me. I do enjoy getting about £10 worth of free food a month via Clubcard though.

^this.

(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:38, Reply)
Sadly
you are right. I was spoiled in Leamington Spa and Warwick as there were more Sainsburys than Tescos!
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:45, Reply)
Not in Redhill, no
a big Sainsbury's in the centre and a little tinny Tescos in the outskirts.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:46, Reply)
Hahhah see how you like being bullied, Dame Shirley Porter you piece of shit scumbag.
They are GHASTLY. My pal Yeti's sister was a buyer for them and actually resigned and went to Sainsbury's because she felt guilty about their treatment of their suppliers.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:49, Reply)
I had no idea
but it's not surprising. Anyway, as I said before, I like Aldi and town markets for my shopping, but as there are none around me, Sainsbury's it is.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:01, Reply)
They are most unethical as an organisation. Ruthless bullies.

(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:06, Reply)

Precisely - Tesco's are on some next level bullying type shizzle.

i had ramen and doritos yesterday, dreadful lunch really
Alt I don't like aldi, the fact that their food is so cheap is hardly worth shopping there for that reason alone.
Sometimes quality does count.

There's some sort of mega grocers in the city, wegmans or something like that, apparently it's for the high class sort but i'd like to go in and see what they've got, maybe I'll dress like a tramp.

Hola!
I just had a lovely lentils & bacon soup.

I like Aldi for my everyday shopping + market for vegs and fresh meat & fish. No Aldi or market in Redhill means Sainsbury's.

I just came back from holidays to an empty fridge myself; so big shopping tonight. Now, although I enjoyed my holidays very much, they always come with 2 problems:

1.- I ate too much, making myself sick several times (too much these days is not that much, really, but anything not soupy makes me sick)

2.- Coming back to a "normal" diet is difficult. I'm starving!!!
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:39, Reply)
still morning sickness?

(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:41, Reply)
Not much of that now
that I'm taking my pills; it's the IBS it seems, not liking my bowels being squeezed all the time.

Just a portion of this, absolutely lovely And this is how it looked in the pan (before the rice was added)

Alt: Aldi is superb, but I can't get everything I want there, although that only tends to extend as far as name brands I use (i.e. Warburtons Toastie, Lea & Perrins, Heinz Ketchup, etc)

There seems to be a bit of a chorizo obsession on /ot
Or is is always you who mentions it?

*some witty comment about Darth's chorizo obsession*
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:09, Reply)
I've mentioned it a few times in the last couple of weeks
If I hadn't, I wouldn't have known the best way to prepare it for the pan. Turns out 0.5cm or thinner slices work very nicely.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 14:13, Reply)
As a man obsessed with the world of sausages I have to say I'm not overkeen on chorizo.
As a cooking ingredient it's OK but it's too paprika-ey, on the whole. A man once told me that cooking it in coca-cola is incredible - but I can personally vouch for cooking it in port. That's excellent.

I can think of a million and one other sausages I'd choose over it, though.

Darth, give Monty his logon back, this isn't funny.

And ey, you should be proud, you're the first person I mention here after my holidays, what does it say about me, eH?

BTW, I got you some black pudding. You didn't specify the type, so got you onion and rice Burgos black pudding, for cooking in bbqs.

I think you should face up to this, and sooner rather than later because people are going to get hurt.

Sainsbury's for the once-a-month 'nice' shop
Asda for the weekly top up of fresh stuff. Tesco is well up it's own anus and too bloody expensive.
Waitrose as a payday treat, or if I want nice cheese.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:59, Reply)
....which you do all the time, of course.
I have eaten some wondrous cheese this weekend. Nommity nom nom.
(, Mon 15 Aug 2011, 13:59, Reply)
Naturally
however if I ate as much nice cheese as I would like, I would have a circumference as opposed to a waistline. Much like Al, really.

EDIT - on your recommendation I tried merguez the other day. Fuck me they're tasty.

I've had some fantastic bargains from going in at the right time.

Morrisons or Tesco.
I do love asda and lidl though. No Aldis very near me.

Oh, and bacon sandwich.

One of my friends has been veggie for years, and admitted yesterday she misses some recipes, but doesn't think her body would be able to handle eating them again, do you know if there is anything medical behind it, or is she simply being a fuckwit?

But I was fine. Still don't eat that much, though. Get her to reintroduce slowly?

Asda for us, cos it's closest (other than Lidl, which I can't bring myself to acknowledge)
There's a B&Q up the road from our Asda. This is worth knowing because yesterday Ms Foxtrot's sister dropped us at Asda and went to B&Q, then picked us up to drive home. She went to B&Q to buy knobs. She'd told us beforehand that she needed knobs, and on the journey home the two sisters had a protracted discussion about how many knobs she'd bought, what type of knobs they were and what she was going to use the knobs for.

Funniest car journey ever.

Sainsbury's as it's closest
the irony of local shops closing down is that I shop everyday, otherwise things go off. therefore i am the perfect candiadate to shop locally and support local business, however the shops are not open when I need them, ie in the evening and Sainsbury's is and therfore gets my custom.
