bbc says that applications have been made for planning permission several times and not been granted.

And in any other situation where planning was refused,
the people applying for permission would either have to give up on their idea of building what they wanted to build, or would have been ordered to tear down whatever it was they had built.

But the rules appear to only apply rather selectively to "travellers"

but they don't tend to live within the law. At least those ones are on land they own, rather than doing the same on some other poor bastard's land.

out of interest, if I'd said they should all be made to bite the kerb, would you have taken the humanitarian angle and said they shouldn't be kicked off?
