They are not an ethnic group
they are a group of people who have chosen to live outside of many of the laws of this country. Comparing them to blacks or jews is ridiculous.

Of course they are.
Definition is law is based on these.
(1) a long shared history, of which the group is conscious as distinguishing it from other groups, and the memory of which it keeps alive;
(2) a cultural tradition of its own, including family and social customs and manners, often but not necessarily associated with religious observance.

being a thieving git is hardly a social custom to encourage
By this definition long standing crime syndicates are an ethnic group

Don't spout shite.
Definition of ethicity is "common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage".

travellers have none of those. Romany gypsies may well, these aren't Romany gypsies, they are a bunch of people who wish to chose an alternative lifestyle. That doesn't give them any fucking right to break the law any more that it would give you the right to say that your alternative lifestyle of having sex with women against their will was something you should be allowed to do. You bloody tool.
(, Wed 31 Aug 2011, 14:32, Reply)
not that being an ethnic group gives you any more right to break the law either, mind you.

(, Wed 31 Aug 2011, 14:37, Reply)
No. it doesn't. Or it certainly shouldn't.
The law of the land ought to transcend the traditions of a culture.
