The book is better than the film IMHObut still not that great, plot wise.

It's a very straightforward plot, agreedbut I thought that was kind of the point, it's just an old fashioned 'quest' type plot with a slightly different twist.
The film would have been better without DeNiro going over the top with the cliche queen act though.
