Intentional threadstomp:
So what's the point of the silly sock-puppets/trolls?

I get the people who are dedicated to being cuntish, I mean it's pretty pathetic when your sole mission in life (of online anyway) is to wind people up but I can see it could make you feel better. I can even see how it's funny, although mostly it isn't to me.

But what do people get out of the silly, vaguely lolwaki ones like Personality Horse? Is it just a misguided marketing gimmick? Is it really funny and I just have no sense of humour?

Alt: I have a new hat, I like hats, tell me about your favourite hat or hats.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:31, 316 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
in a minute someone will tell you that
you just don't get the point of baldmonkey.

which in turn misses the point: you don't WANT to get the point of a tedious twat being lolwaki, you just want him to fuck off and die slowly and non wakkily, but nonetheless horrifically painfully, in a hole somewhere.

which is why ignoring them is the best thing to do, really.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:33, Reply)
I think my point was that I don't get the point of BaldMonkey
if indeed that's who it is, or indeed I care. I was genuinely hopeing someone would enlighten me.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:39, Reply)
yeah but sooner or later someone (normally PC)
will explain patronisingly that if you have to ask what the point of baldmonkey is, you just don't "get" baldmonkey.

when the real point is, you don't WANT to get him, but you get him rammed down your throat anyway! and not in a good way!
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:43, Reply)
Fair enough.
One tick in the "attention seeking pointlessness" box then.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:46, Reply)
Personality horses for courses innit.
See what I did there. Lol
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:47, Reply)
That's part of the joke.
To suggest that the reason you don't get baldmonkey is that he's a highbrow ironic observational comedian and you're too thick to see beyond the lolwakki schtick.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:47, Reply)
Nah, the thing with baldmonkey
is more that he is capable of being really quite funny. The problem is that I think he's got a bit carried away with the whole two man beakering lolwaki car crash that Mono and he have made of talk.

that, or he's stopped taking his meds again.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:01, Reply)
WAS capable of it
when was he last really funny? 2008?
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:11, Reply)
Talk is really bad at the moment,
which is why I've been over here increasingly and presumably why you made the leap?

OK.
I'll put a tick in the "I just have no sense of humour" box. Not that you and I agree on much.

I have far too much hair to be contained in a hat.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:44, Reply)
I, on the other hand
have to wear one all summer to avoid looking like The Red Skull, on account of being, as you say, a baldy.

That said, last year I didn't for a few days, then when I went and had my head shaved, I looked like a bloody Ying and Yang symbol where the untanned bits met the exposed bits. It's not a good look.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 14:49, Reply)
I am partially bald.
I mostly wear hats to keep the sun out of my weak and inferior eyes, or to keep the rain off, or sometimes just because I look so damn good in them.

Oh poo, I didn't realise there was new threads going on, i'll copy'n'paste from before here
----------------------------

Yo', sorry, I dashed off.
Iron Man is deffo the coolest avenger, totally agree, but one of the whole points of marvel, at least from a geek's point of view, is all the subtext messages and all that. I mean, that's always been the thing with (ok, this is DC, same diff in this case) Superman, is he jesus like? Is it better to be a superman agmonst humans or an average superman agmonst supermen? In the realm of aliens, does god exist? Is the world better off under the rule of verious different systems? ....etc..... I'm not heavily into DC/Marvel/etc, but I thought maybe you were, so that's why I pulled up on the whole Tony Stark being such an extreme over something that I thought (and was wrong about, which is fair 'nuff, my mistake, sorry) you held so closely and dear.

Kindda like this, I'm jewish, I'm not religious, I like bacon, I donno what i believe, have no idea how to define myself. Cultuerly, I'm jewish, but I donno about the religion side of things. I would never say "Oh man, hitler is so fucking cool" even though Robery Carlyl playing him in the film "Hitler: The rise of evil" was extremly powerful and charamastic. I'd watch the film, be entertained by the film, be amazed at the acting by Robert Carlyl, but I would never say "Hitler was the coolest dictator". Which also brings to another point of yours, I thought it was Tony Stark/Iron Man that you loved, rather than Robert Downing Junior.

Yes!
I was expecting this because Wookiee and Badger gave it away before I'd even started reading the fucking book. Still made me sad though. Ploughing through my Neil Gaiman so I can get on to the second book.

On the strength of this thread I am currently stealing his novels RIGHT NOW.

(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:13, Reply)
Hope you like them
A bit of a mixed bunch, but some really good stuff in there.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:16, Reply)
What are the names of the best, say, 5 of his books.
I'll read them and decide if I want to pursue him after that.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:18, Reply)
I don't think he's writen more than4 or 5 novels anyway.
I'd say either American Gods or Neverwhere are the best, depending if your more interested in London or theology. Them there,s Stardust and Anansi boys and his kids stuff, which is not bad, but kids stuff... WIki pedia Interworld which I haven't read to this list. Oh and there's Good omens which I liked, but it may depend on you pratchet tolerance.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:28, Reply)
I'll give you American Gods when I'm done with it - start with that.

(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:28, Reply)
I think it's better.
I do like Sandman a lot, but I don't get along with some of the art at various points. (I know he's not the artist, but it's impossible to separate the writing from the art in a comic). With his prose it's all down to me to picture it and that works better for me.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:10, Reply)
I am so-so about his prose stuff
I'm very fond of Neverwhere and also american gods, but I felt Stardust was weak and Anansi Boys enjoyable but not earth shattering.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:13, Reply)
I never read Stardust actually, although I enjoyed the movie.
Not as much as I enjoyed Coraline which I adored.

And Anansi Boys is definitely the weakest though. Of the novels at least. I find his short story collections hit and miss.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:26, Reply)
The book is better than the film IMHO
but still not that great, plot wise.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:28, Reply)
It's a very straightforward plot, agreed
but I thought that was kind of the point, it's just an old fashioned 'quest' type plot with a slightly different twist.

The film would have been better without DeNiro going over the top with the cliche queen act though.
(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:34, Reply)
Yeh, that's SOON! Brilliant!

Hmmm, coalt-cha.

(, Fri 14 Oct 2011, 15:02, Reply)
I'm not much of a comics Geek I'm afraid.
Although I like Neil Gaiman's stuff, but that's a bit different.

I think there' also a point about liking one thing in fiction and another in real life and also about even bad characters having redeeming qualities that one may admire even if one doesn't like the totality.

Also good people are very dull, generally.

I think more widely there's very little that I define myself as in that way. I mean I'm an atheist but that does not stop me liking overtly Christian characters/people, or indeed disliking the majority of atheists, it's not very good at groups /autist.
