The second one has just made me do a proper awwwww.sadly however I will never be able to get a mortgage on a scientists salary and I don't have any rich relatives. So it's renting for me, for the considerable forseeable future.

Me too =)I think it's an extremely rare thing for someone to buy a place without some sort of inheritance (even if it's pre-death). Thing is though with a couple, is that you have the potential for a double income.
