Don't know about a scandal, but it's unusual.
My great-grandfather was born in what's now northern Ireland but ran away from home at an early age, joined the navy and assumed a new name, which has since become the family surname. Since he took his real name to the grave and there are no known copies of his birth certificate, any ancestors before him are untraceable.

As for anything else, my family is basically one big petty argument disguised as a group of people. I have nothing to do with them.
