Most companies don't want to deal with 'applicants' they want a previous sifted batch of C.Vs to work from. This is where the recruitment folk move in. They've 'sold' the fact they can fill the role to a company, and in exchange for keeping the salary down, they've forwarded a small number of suitable individuals for evaluation.
Your best bet? Get it online and PHONE some recruiter proir to applying. Get a personal relationship with a recruiter, badger them and bully them into representing you.
Own the PHONE!!!

Make sure you do it properly and at the same time, make sure you set up proper search criteria. No point being notified about jobs you've got not chance of getting.
