I believe Rory Lyon probably meant that sarcastically.
But it really is The Simpsons. Just because people like me no longer think it's as good as it used to be doesn't mean that every year a whole new set of people don't get to discover the wittiest, cleverest, funniest cartoon they have ever seen.

I still prefer Ren and Stimpy.

If it had lasted 20 years and still managed at least two decent jokes an episode I'd agree.
But it didn't.

The last point in that was made by someone who hasn't seen it since about 2006, it seems.
Although I wasn't arguing for it's current greatness anyway.

I'm not taking this as seriously as that makes it seem...

Never mind all that, did you ever see any of the Ren & Stimpy stuff they geared towards adults?
That was some proper shite.
(, Thu 15 Dec 2011, 21:21, Reply)
It's the 'Friends' of the cartoon genre.

Don't get me started on how unjust the hatred of Friends is.
Friends is hated by people who think they know comedy and want a cheap target.
(, Thu 15 Dec 2011, 21:05, Reply)
No, Friends is utter dreck.

(, Thu 15 Dec 2011, 21:05, Reply)
Friends is the Coronation Street of situation comedy.

Nice soundbite.
Ever thought about being a politician?

Oh for fucks sake BGB
You appear to have got me and ^him on the same side. I don't appreciate you doing that to me...

Haha!
Gotcha ;)

I'm not going to have the argument about why you are wrong.
Largely because it will make me sound like a fan of the show, which despite how much I admire what the writers achieved, I'm actually not.

But you are wrong.

Friends is terrible. It's "well written" in that it achieves what it sets out to do, much like the Sun and the rest of the red tops are 'well written' in the same way.

(, Thu 15 Dec 2011, 21:17, Reply)
I'm fairly sure I avoided saying 'well written' on purpose, but actually, it's a good phrase..
Friends is funny.

It has annoying characters, it has appalling storylines, it has American Sitcom economics, and yet despite that the writers achieve some brilliant jokes, some brilliant set pieces and some brilliant character moments.

It achieved great moments in spite of what it is, not because of.

Friends is shit.
Apart from Aniston's arse, obviously.

But to paraphrase Flava Flav, nobody lives like that, nobody even looks like that. Sanitised, homogenised, smug, soulless, shit beloved of women and homosexuals.

Plus the fact that a lot of it is borderline catchphrase comedy.

Will Self wrote a marvellous piece on why he hates Friends. We see entirely eye to eye on this, me and Will do.

I'm happy to accept the fact
that both of us appear to have given it more thought that its worth and arrived at different conclusions...
