Now that is sad, I bet it is a nice house too.
Its all being done for political gain- Cameron thinks it will make the midlands conurbation and the north like him more (it won't), Milliband just relishes annihilating southern rurality.

Well maybe.
The part of the line by my mum's is an existing but underused mainline that used to go to Birmingham. I see the having to move as an opportunity, to move to a bungalow or flat where she can be independant, but with a warden on call when she needs them. As for the railway lne, I think it is just going to end up as a normal medium speed line to take the pressure off the already up to capacity west coast mainline. It just needs a gimic to get the funding, so let's call it the high speed line.

And it'll all get scrapped in five years' time when they realise it's a vastly expensive project with no direct benefit to London or the south-east.

This is a possibility.
I feel they want to throw so much money at it now, it will be uneconomic to not continue with it.
