These have solid wood arms on them, so it's impossible to stretch out on them.Yours may be different.

I'll be honestI can't remember exactly - they were in a charity furniture shop, but I think the arm rests were leather but with scrolly wood bits on the front

That sounds more comfortable than ercol, then.The arms on ercol stuff are almost a separate attachment, so there's a big gap between the sofa cushion and the arm.
