My Grandad was an engineer for Bristol. He worked on the Beaufighter and was responsible for keeping Bristol planes supplied with parts on the Southern airfields.
He also, with a colleague, designed a new type of aircraft turret which was first used on the Boulton-Paul Defiant and later on Wellington and possibly Lancaster bombers. They needed to find a way to adapt the old turret, using a single Vickers gun to mount American Brownings.
He was in a protected occupation, so wasn't allowed to join up. As a result he did all the above, between the ages of 17 and 24, whilst getting presented with white feathers on a regular basis. After the war, he joined the Army and rallied Land Rovers.

same deal, not allowed to join up as he designed and built munitions factories. Just got constant shit from the public, though.
