I remember when he was staying with us, must have been in his late seventies,
Beautiful summers evening, he was say out in the garden and my dad said to him "you're very quiet Michael" to which he replies "I hate the dusk, reminds me of air raids" then he spoke for ages about the war and being shot down.

I'm glad none of my lot had to go through that.
Having said that, my paternal grandfather was a Glaswegian docker. Getting shot down would've just made him angry.
