storyline helps,
Characters you can get involved with, and it has to make you care what's going to happen next. Like with Lost, where you were constantly wondering what was going to be revealed. Then at the end it was revealed that the writers didn't have a fucking clue and couldn't care less whether the viewers were satisfied or not.

And cinematography. I remember a US series called Murder One. It was the first time the characters were framed off-centre in the picture, and it set the standard for a lot of really slick series since. That was a really good one. Had me hooked from the very beginning.

alt: I was interviewed on Five news once. Looked like a tit. Sounded like a tit. Also interviewed on Radio Scotland. Sounded like a tit, but at least I didn't look like a tit.
