I am going to compare to big game.
Imagine, if you will, the African savannah. A lion with his pride, fierce and proud in his strength. But what's this? A lone male. Younger, but no less powerful for it. As is the way of things, a showdown is inevitable. They circle each other, gauging each other's strength, a few swipes and both back away slowly. A minimal loss of face on either side but with, perhaps, a promise of a more serious exchange to come.

Man, Modernism was the single most important literary movement of the last century, but it's boring as fuck to read. Give me Don De Lillo or Martin Amis over DH Lawrence any day.
