Most animals do, and it's only natural for us to anthropomorphise them.
If a creature is entirely dependent on you for its welfare, ad you love it, it doesn't matter whether it's a goldfish or an elephant. Anyone you love will break your heart when they die. But like you said, if you know he had the best life you could possibly have given him, and he was happy, and he didn't suffer, you did alright by him.
