Also: have you tried the Ladybird reading series?As I remember, they were very good.
Otherwise, you're a Stephen King fan, aren't you? The Stand is always a good one to read - the full version, not the original. Takes forever, and has that same epic scale the LotR has. With fewer orcs and more bloated corpses.
