I'd say something along the lines of "well, they have IT departments, don't they?"
But then I have worked in academic IT before and to call it "amateur" would be highly offensive to almost anybody that can operate a mouse.

There's nothing wrong with the IT skills of most people in Uni IT departments
It's their interpersonal skills that are usally the issue.

Actually, much like most IT staff.

No, the problem is usually with the funding.
Academic staff want all the flashy gear to show the board, but aren't willing to pay for the supporting infrastructure. As such, all the professional IT types get frustrated and leave for commercial enterprise, leaving you lot with Colin the school leaver.

I don't know which Unis you've seen that at
most academics I know wouldn't even know how to turn on a smartboard, let alone care about using one.

It was a college.
A combination of a gadget enthusiast, IT ignorant Head, no infrastructure, 1930s power solutions and the comms room in a disused boiler room. Fucking nightmare.
