There's a lot of this at uni too,
but no formal training to deal with it as such. Some people take advantage and I know of a couple of staff members who have been asked to leave, or moved on - and absolutely fair enough because they're abusing a position of trust etc. There are also situations where a particular student knows exactly what they want out of it (PhD, great reference, better marks, decent postdoc etc.) and is manipulating things that way.
