I'm not arguing, I just assumed that was how their business model worked.
But the point is that if people no longer click on Google ads in the numbers they have been, the less businesses will pay for them, no? Assuming that's right, they could find they've overreached themselves with premises, salaries, Segways, waqqqi chairs etc and the business could ultimately collapse.

What people are searching for, clicking on etc. There's big money in information like that. The whole targeted ads business came about from Google selling that information to advertisers. Facebook uses the same model, pretty much and they've only recently started advertising, so far just on their mobile apps.

Using location (a-gps and wifi ) plus your internet history and click-throughs to serve you up ads for what's nearest to you that you might be interested in.
This is why Google provides Android for free.
