they don't make enough of a difference
partly because there are too many of them. if we only had one a year, people would notice it. but of course you can't draw that distinction. no tamil tigers, it's the stop the war coalition this year.

see also the tube strikes. people were fairly sympathetic the first time round. now everyone just sees a load of greedy incompetent cunts. i even saw an indian comedian do a routine about how asian parents no longer push their children into the cliches of law/medicine; these days they are all desperate for their kids to get into london underground...
