Alt: Dunno really, I've seen good and bad bits of everywhere I've lived/worked/travelled to. I'm hearing bad reports of South Africa - a South African couple I know who lived and worked here in the UK for ages sold up their businesses and moved back there a couple of years ago. They're coming back because it's really not safe. On those reports I'd probably not want to go there.

I would expect that the tourist areas are well-policed
These guys live in a gated community AND have their own compound. There have been several violent home invasions in the last few months in their area, coupled with the regular carjackings and the muggings they've decided to call it a day.
